JEFFREY MERIS (b. 1991, Haiti and raised in the Bahamas) will exhibit part of a series titled “Now You See Me, Now You Don’t” in which plaster replicas of Meris’ disjointed body kinetically destroy themselves over perforated sheet metal. These ‘body-doubles’ are vessels of the violence of racial interpellation. Through his use of shopping carts, plastic crates, fruit, and cast body parts, he draws attention to everyday, overlooked experiences while his kinetic sculptures explore the simultaneous invisibility/hyper-visibility of People of Color in American society. Meris earned an A.A in Arts and Crafts from the College of The Bahamas, a B.F.A in Sculpture from Temple University, and an M.F.A in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2019. Meris is a two-time Harry C. Moore Lyford Cay Foundation Scholar 2012 & 2017, Guttenberg Arts A.I.R 2016, a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture 2019 alumnus, among other achievements. Meris has exhibited and spoken in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vienna, Leipzig, Port au Prince and Nassau. Meris is currently a 2020 NXTHVN Studio Fellow and has a solo exhibition upcoming at White Columns January 2021.

PAUL BOOTH (b. 1978, Akron, Ohio) is exhibiting Intimate drawings exploring recurring themes, such as self-portraiture, literary and mythical figures, religious iconography, and Sisyphean feats. Compositions, whether populated by many bodies or a single figure, occupy a compressed space. The picture plane creates a boundary with figures pushed to the edges, filling the space with layered marks of colored pencil, ink, gouache, watercolor and crayon. Booth graduated with his BFA from Arizona State University and currently lives and works in New York City.

SITUATIONS presents Paul Booth and Jeffrey Meris. In addition to Online Viewing Rooms, In-person exhibitions can be seen from December 1st to 6th. A selection of Paul Booth drawings will be at SITUATIONS alongside our current exhibition of Sue Williams, while an installation of sculptures by Jeffrey Meris can be viewed at Marinaro Gallery alongside a multi-gallery presentation including Karen Finley presented by FIERMAN, Joseph Hart by Halsey McKay, and group shows by Jesse Greenberg and Marinaro.
