SITUATIONS and NEW DISCRETIONS are pleased to jointly announce a new, collaborative venture in Chelsea, located at 515 W 20th Street, 3rd floor.

Programming will alternate between SITUATIONS and NEW DISCRETIONS, in addition to co-curated exhibitions. While the artist rosters will remain distinct, this joint model supports both galleries in continuing their work with emerging artists and risk-taking programming, while expanding into a generously scaled exhibition space for artists presenting larger works and installations.

The inaugural exhibition, programmed by SITUATIONS, will be a solo presentation of new paintings by Masamitsu Shigeta, titled “Jewelry Box.” Opening Thursday January 18, 2024 with a reception from 6-8pm, Jewelry Box will remain on view through February 24, 2024. A solo exhibition of new works by Clarity Haynes presented by NEW DISCRETIONS will open February 29, 2024. Entitled Portals, the exhibition will be accompanied by Clarity’s first monograph.

The first collaborative show will be in the summer, a two-person venture featuring Jerry the Marble Faun and Vincent Tiley.

SITUATIONS will continue year-round programming at its primary gallery location at 127 Henry Street. Artwork best suited to a more intimate setting, such as an upcoming solo exhibition of photographs by Karlheinz Weinberger (organized in cooperation with the Karlheinz Weinberger Foundation) opening January 11th, 2024 will remain the focus of the Henry Street storefront. Expanding into an additional space provides exhibiting artists with the option to present their work in the location which best suits their vision and practice, without imposing a scale-shift on the entire roster at once.

A HISTORY OF COLLABORATION

Jackie Klempay of SITUATIONS and Benjamin Tischer of NEW DISCRETIONS have a history of collaboration, dating back to 2015 with Genesis Breyer P-Orridge’s “Pandrogenous Avant-yard Sale” at Klempay’s former gallery in Brooklyn. In 2019, they organized a group exhibition titled “Fresh Fruit,” aimed at circumventing the pitfalls of overlooking younger artists in lieu of older artists who have complete bodies of work. Klempay and Tischer co-authored an article in 2019 for ArtNews, covering the Venice Biennale.

ABOUT NEW DISCRETIONS

NEW DISCRETIONS is a contemporary art space interested in a less-defined approach to exhibition making. Conceptual in its core, ND focuses on both legacies of artists past and present. ND currently works with the estates of BREYER P-ORRIDGE, Stephen Irwin, Bob Mizer, Alan Vega, and Timothy Wyllie. Living collaborators include Vaginal Davis, Paul Gabrielli, Clarity Haynes, Cary Leibowitz, Letitia Quesenberry, Matthew Porter, Vincent Tiley, and many more. New Discretions is founded by Benjamin Tischer, formerly of INVISIBLE-EXPORTS. In addition to collaborating in numerous commercial collaborations, Tischer has curated institutional exhibitions at DOX Centre (Prague); Pioneer Works (New York); The Carnegie (Covington).
