ANDRÉS BEDOYA
ANDRES BÉDOYA (b. 1978, La Paz, Bolivia) currently lives and works in Mexico City. His work reflects upon the complex and rich history of the Andean region of Latin America. Bedoya explores the origin of belief systems, rituals and objects, reconstructing them within an abstracted biographical narrative. This includes both historical and contemporary practices, from pre-Columbian cultures to those imposed during the Spanish colonial era to those maintained today. The works that comprise his oeuvre make an oblique reference to various sources, such as the Inca metallurgy, Roman Catholic iconography, monetary systems, and the folklore of contemporary Bolivia.
Bedoya’s sculptures, drawings, installations and videos have been exhibited in Europe, the US, and throughout Latin America. Solo exhibitions include the Museo Nacional de Arte, La Paz; SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia; and Abrons Arts Center in New York City. Recent group exhibitions include Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Nicelle Beauchene, New York City; Coral Gables Museum. Miami, Florida, among others. He was the co-creator of Brooklyn is Burning, a series of performance and video events held in New York City in various spaces, including MoMA PS1. Bedoya holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design from the University of Texas, Austin.
