ABDOLREZA AMINLARI (b. 1979, Tehran) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He employs geometric patterning and embroidery as a means to examine labor and the passage of time. A new suite of works on paper handmade by the artist emphasize color vibration, singular imagery, and the physicality of their materials, exploring geometric abstraction through the lens of memory and lived experience. Intricate compositions reference the cross-stitching in Persian rugs made by his maternal relatives. Currently Aminlari has an exhibition on view at SITUATIONS, Chelsea titled Everywhere in Between. The title speaks to an interstitial space, as in the tiny gap between each stitch, as well as a state of in-betweenness, a term he often uses when referring to his shape-shifting iconography. Interpreted through a diasporic experience, this sentiment echoes a sense of feeling between cultures, countries, generations over time.
Aminlari received his BFA from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit. His work has been nationally and Internationally exhibited, including SITUATIONS, New York; Andrew Rafacz, Chicago; O Gallery, Tehran; Quadro Gallery, Dubai; KVKM Kunstverein Cologne; Taymour Grahne, New York; the Derfner Judaica Museum, New York; New York; Long House, New York; Jackie Klempay, Brooklyn. His set for “Gesang an das noch namenlose Land” was shown in collaboration with musician Katharina Rosenberger in Basel, Switzerland; Hanover, Germany; Sélestat, France; Schlosskirche, Germany; and New York City. His work is included in The Smart Museum (Chicago); The Jalanbo Collection, New York; The New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY; Fidelity Corporate Art Collection, Boston, MA; TD Bank, Toronto, Canada; and College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan. He recently completed residencies at Dieu Donné Paper, New York; West Elm Ceramics Residency, Brooklyn; and Penland School of Craft Winter Residency Fellowship In Paper, Asheville, NC.
ANDRÉS BEDOYA (b. 1978, La Paz, Bolivia) currently lives and works in La Paz, Bolivia. His work reflects upon the complex and rich history of the Andean region of Latin America. Bedoya explores the origin of belief systems, rituals and objects, reconstructing them within an abstracted biographical narrative. This includes both historical and contemporary practices, from pre-Columbian cultures to those imposed during the Spanish colonial era to those maintained today. The works that comprise his oeuvre make an oblique reference to various sources, such as the Inca metallurgy, Roman Catholic iconography, monetary systems, and the folklore of contemporary Bolivia.
Bedoya graduated with a BFA from the University of Texas, Austin (2001). He has exhibited extensively in both North and South America. Solo exhibitions include SITUATIONS, New York, Museo Nacional de Arte, (La Paz, Bolivia), Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art (Savannah, GA), Gonzalez y Gonzalez (Lima, Perú), Centro Cultural de España (La Paz, Bolivia), Galería Temporal (Santiago, Chile), Ginsberg Galería (Lima, Perú), and Abrons Arts Center (New York, NY). He’s held group shows at Americas Society/Council of the Americas (New York), Videobrasil (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Dixit (Buenos Aires), and Momenta (Brooklyn, New York). Between 2008 and 2010, Bedoya received critical attention as co-curator of Brooklyn is Burning at MoMA PS1, Queens, NY. Most recently, Bedoya completed a residency at Fundación Ama Amoedo Residencia Artística (FAARA), in José Ignacio, Uruguay.
